Ragnarok Online (Korean: 라그나로크 온라인, marketed as Ragnarök, and alternatively subtitled The Final Destiny of the Gods) is a massive multiplayer online role-playing game created by Gravity based on the manhwaRagnarok by Lee Myung-jin. It was released in South Korea on 31 August 2002 for Microsoft Windows. The game has spawned an animated series, Ragnarok the Animation, and a sequel game, Ragnarok Online 2: Legend of the Second. Player characters exist in a world with a player environment that gradually changes with the passage of time. Major changes in the features and history of the world take place as episodes in the RO timeline.
Gameplay[edit]
Ragnarok is more fun with friends - conquer your way through any challenge with the help of your fellow adventurers by forming a Party! By forming a Party of up to 12 players, you can make your levelling experience easier and more fun! Creating a Party. You must have Basic Skill Level 5 to join a Party, and Basic Skill Level 7 to create a Party. There you’ll unravel the astonishing truth behind Ragnarok. You will see some force-wielder men who thirst for world domination. Here then, you are moving to a world of both darkness and substance of things to attune the power of Force, the Dark Ragnarok Online.
The gameplay is heavily based around Norse mythology, wherein the characters are taken from the stories around Ragnarök. Player characters interact in a 3D environment but are represented by 2D character sprites for front, back, side and diagonal facings. The major types of server-supported gameplay are Player vs Environment, Guild vs Guild, Player vs Player. Also supported by the game server are Group vs Group, Arena Combat, Player vs Monster, Player vs All, and various other specific scenarios at designated instance locations in the game world. Non-player character-run challenges and contests are also available with prizes, awards, and/or in a specific hall of fame listing.
Players can sign up for quests and submit them for rewards as well as access storage and teleport services for a small fee. Every town will have the usual stores and shops where players can purchase and sell their items. The stores differ from city to city because each city is affiliated with a different job that players can choose from; therefore, the goods each sell are relatively for that particular job that the city is affiliated with. Quests usually provide a unique reward such as learning a new skill or receiving a rare item.
The job system initially consisted of 13 classes, which has increased to over 50 via several updates. Each class specializes in certain skills corresponding to archetypes in a role-playing game. Additionally, numerous equipment are exclusive to particular classes. The greatness of the equipment depends on the character attribute status.
Once a player reaches player level 99 and job level 50, they can 'rebirth' their character (not applicable to expansion classes and Super Novices). Rebirthing brings a character back to level 1 for both player level and job level. Reborn characters generally work the same as regular characters up until the second class. Instead of a second class, characters that are born can transcend to a new second job, different from those of a character that hasn't been reborn. These transcended job types have more skills and a larger number of 'stat points' to allocate to characters compared to second classes. The experience curve for transcendent jobs is significantly higher. Players are given the option to advance onto their third classes which provide an additional set of skills as well as allowing with player to break through the traditional level cap of 99.
Setting[edit]
Ragnarok Online is divided into a series of maps on two major continents, each of which has its own terrain and native monsters, though many monsters are present in multiple regions. Transportation between maps requires loading the new map and monsters are unable to travel from one map to another unless directly associated with the player such as a pet, mount, or hireling. Areas from Norse mythology are included.
Development[edit]
The official Ragnarok Onlineservers underwent massive game system changes in 2010, which has been titled 'Renewal'. Renewal revamped game mechanics, changed the behavior and interaction of stats, gears, and modifiers in the stat system, changed the way and amount of character experience, and introduced the 3rd Job Classes. There are various other changes that come with Renewal, including interface and hotkey alterations, as well as skill changes.

Ragnarok Mobile[edit]
Gravity Co. Ltd. released eight separate games for the mobile phone allowing players to experience the game on the road.[4] Each version focuses on the main aspect of certain classes based on the version of the game they have. Though not placed in the server, players control their character and complete a series of quests or tasks. As players earn zeny (the in-game currency) they are able to send the zeny to their real accounts. Also, a ranking is present where characters are ranked by the amount of zeny the character has.

Major changes in the features and history of the world take place as Episodes in the RO timeline.
Opening Cinematic[edit edit source]
In the early days of Ragnarok Online, an opening video would start up when a player launches the game. It would appear before the login screen. For some reason, the video was removed from the game later on and it is unknown why, although it could be attributed to players wanting to log in quickly and not have to sit through the opening. That would also mean that there was no option to skip the opening whenever the game launched.
Music of Ragnarok Online[edit edit source]
A few soundtracks were released for RO, but they mostly contain the same tracks.
Official Ragnarok Online Servers[edit edit source]
In the wake of RO's troubled beginnings, many private (illegal) servers came about. These private servers in no way support the official servers and have caused Gravity developers to lose money from players who financially support private servers over the official servers.
Active Official Servers[edit edit source]
To help support the longevity of RO and its developers, here is a list of official servers players should play on:
Inactive Official Servers[edit edit source]
This is a list of official servers that have ceased operation. Only oRO and pRO had their player data merged with the iRO server. Players from other servers had to create new accounts on iRO to keep playing the game.
- Official Oceania (oRO)
- These servers shut down in March of 2007. They supported both the New Zealand and Australia regions. Players of oRO were given the option to transfer over to iRO.
- Official Middle East-North Africa (aeRO/aRO)
- Shut down around 2008/2009. It reopened in 2009, but closed for good in February of 2013.
- Official Vietnam (vRO)
- These servers closed down in 2007 because not enough restrictions were placed for RMT (real money trade). It reopened in 2008 and then shut down for good in 2011.
- Official India (inRO)
- Shut down in August of 2008. iRO services expanded to the India region in response.[2]
- Official Malaysia & Singapore (eRO & mRO)(old)
- Originally hosted by Game Flier in 2002, it consists of two servers, eRO (English language) and mRO (Bahasa Melayu, also called Malay language). Their contract with Gravity ended when the server did not make enough profit to renew the contract. Shut down 2013 October 31. Player data cannot be transferred to iRO, but iRO will now be open to the region.[3][4]
Ragnarok Online Classes
- Official Philippines (pRO)(old)
- Shut down 2015 March 31 due to lack of measurements against botting and unbalanced Kafra Shop, which made players quit the server more often than not.[5] Players were given the option of transferring over to iRO.[6]
- Official Russia (ruRO)(old)
- Shut down 2015 November 16 for reasons unknown.[7]
- Official China (cRO)(old)
- cRO originally began service on 2002 and was hosted by Game Flier.[citation needed] In 2005, Shanda Entertainment took over from Game Flier.[8] It announced on 2011 November 1 that it would be closing down all RO service as of 2011 December 30.[9] At the time of closing, cRO was updated to Episode 13.3 with Brasilis and Byalan 6F. Player data was not going to be preserved for a future Chinese service or transfer to an existing service. On 2012 March 30, GRAVITY signed a contract with Kunlun Games to reopen cRO and began services on 2013 February 28.[10] About 3 years later, they were unable to renew their contract with GRAVITY and shut down 2016 February 19.[11]
- Official Brazil (bRO)(old)
- After Level Up lost the right to host pRO, they eventually lost the rights to host bRO as well. Members of bRO staff along with bRO accounts were transferred to Gravity Interactive as part of their new WarpPortal Brazil network. Brazil players can only make RO accounts under WarpPortal Brazil, NOT WarpPortal.[12]
- Official Europe (euRO)
- Shut down for reasons unknown. In response, ruRO opened a Revo-Classic server for euRO players. Data was not transferred.[13]
- Official Thailand (thRO)(old)
- Asiasoft published the original thRO servers before it was taken over by Electronics Extreme. However, the contract with Electronics Extreme was only temporary as GRAVITY opened up a Thailand office to take control of the thRO servers.[14]

- Official Taiwan (tRO)(old)
- Originally hosted by Game Flier.
Controversy[edit edit source]
Towards the end of the closed beta testing for the original Korean servers of RO (kRO), it was announced that the game will be released as a subscription-based game, much like many other MMORPGs in 2002. Some of the beta testers were upset and made numerous hacks on the RO servers.[15] The hacks crippled the game so much so that Gravity Co. pretty much went bankrupt. In an effort to save the company, Samsung Electronics offered to buy them out. To watch over their new investment, Samsung appointed a manager to oversee development on RO. This manager wished to reshape the game into his own idea. This caused many of the original developers and the lead designer of the game to quit mid-development in rebellion.[16][17] As such, many of the original concepts for RO were never fully implemented into the game. The game continues to suffer issues from the games troubled development.
