Responsible Gambling Week

PGAM is a grassroots campaign that depends on the participation of NCPG state Affiliate, organizational and individual members, state health agencies, gambling companies, recovery groups and a wide range of healthcare organizations and providers. Groups across America hold conferences, air Public Service Announcements, provide counselor trainings, host health screening days, run social media campaigns and many other activities to increase public awareness of problem gambling and the availability of prevention, treatment and recovery services.

The 2021 PGAM theme is “Awareness + Action” #AwarenessPlusAction #PGAM

The goals of this national campaign are:

To increase public awareness of problem gambling and the availability of prevention, treatment & recovery services.

To encourage healthcare providers to screen clients for problem gambling.

EVENTS

Tell us about your events (click here ) to share it with the national problem gambling/responsible gambling community!

Click here for a list of PGAM events across the country. This page has events planned for 2021 and some examples from 2020 for ideas/suggestions – we will update as new information becomes available. Some organizations did their press conferences virtually in 2020 once the pandemic started; some put the materials on DVDs or digital files and sent them to their press contacts that way. Many organizations (as you know) did their conferences or trainings online.

About the week

During Gambling Harm Awareness Week, we encourage people to talk about the harms associated with gambling and the effects they can have on communities, families, friends, workplaces and individuals. Gambling harm can affect self-esteem, relationships, physical and mental health, work performance and social life.

The week focuses on personal stories of recovery, which are powerful because they offer a sense of hope and optimism. They also encourage open community discussions that help to reduce stigma, which can be a barrier to help seeking.

2020 updates

Responsible Gambling Week Nyc

In Victoria, Gambling Harm Awareness Week will run 1925 October 2020, continuing with the theme TALK.SHARE.SUPPORT.

The effects of COVID-19 and the associated restrictions will be felt by Victorians for a long time. During this difficult period, many people in our community who have lost jobs and/or are experiencing increased stress, mental health issues and financial worries are more vulnerable to gambling harm.

Some people may have turned to gambling as a way of coping, while others who have stopped or reduced their gambling may feel anxious about maintaining this behaviour change. In this environment, it is important to continue sharing stories of lived experience and providing support to those who may be at risk of gambling harm.

Responsible Gambling Week 2019

Support the week

Gambling Harm Awareness Week provides an opportunity to watch or read firsthand experiences of people who have overcome, or are dealing with, the negative effects of gambling. Stories in which others will find the hope, comfort, strength and encouragement they need to:

  • talk about the effect gambling is having on their health and wellbeing, including feelings of anxiety or stress
  • share stories that show gambling harm can happen to anyone
  • seek support or support someone experiencing gambling harm.

Responsible Gambling Week 2021

We encourage stakeholders to share our digital content during the week to get your communities to TALK.SHARE.SUPPORT.

Due to COVID-19, this year the Foundation will run a digitally-focused Gambling Harm Awareness Week. In the interests of public health, we cannot host or support in-person community events.

A downloadable supporter toolkit for stakeholders will be available on this page for use by anyone who would like to support the week.
